CASE STUDY
Platform Migration + UX Redesign
Industry: Industrial Fasteners | Specialty Hardware | B2B Distribution & Supply Chain
Overview & Theme
Advance Components is a premier master stocking distributor of industrial fasteners and specialty hardware. With a massive inventory of over 75 million parts, they serve as a critical link in the supply chain for the automotive, solar, and aerospace industries.
The project involved a strategic platform migration to Shopify Plus, designed to transform their traditional industrial catalog into a high-performance digital storefront. The new solution focuses on managing extreme SKU complexity, providing instant access to technical documentation, and streamlining the B2B purchasing process for professional procurement teams and engineers.
Customized Shopify theme optimized for high-volume SKU management, technical attribute filtering, and streamlined B2B procurement workflows.

About Advance Components
Founded in 1972, Advance Components has spent over 50 years as a premier master stocking distributor of specialty industrial fasteners. Operating from a 33,000-square-foot facility in Carrollton, Texas, they maintain a "smart inventory" of over 75 million parts, ensuring that the highest-demand components are always ready for immediate shipment.
As an ISO 9001:2015 certified, woman-owned business (WBENC), Advance is more than just a warehouse; they are a critical supply chain partner. They provide high-level technical support, custom bagging, and specialized distributor partnership programs (DPP) that help manufacturers and distributors streamline their procurement and focus on their core business.
The Challenge
Advance Components faced the "B2B Digital Gap"—the distance between complex industrial requirements and modern user expectations:
- Massive SKU Management: Handling over 75 million parts with deep technical attributes while maintaining site speed.
- The "Find My Fastener" Problem: Customers often struggle to identify exact parts based on measurements or photos without manual expert help.
- B2B Procurement Barriers: The need to balance instant "Buy Now" transactions with professional "Request a Quote" workflows for bulk orders.
- Technical Asset Access: Ensuring engineers can instantly find and download spec sheets, CAD drawings, and technical newsletters.
The Solution
Enterprise Theme Implementation
We utilized the Enterprise theme as the foundation, specifically chosen for its ability to handle large-scale catalogs without code bloat. This allowed for a "search-first" architecture that feels lightning-fast despite the millions of SKUs in the database.
High-Performance Search & Faceted Filtering
To solve the discovery issue, we implemented an advanced faceted search system. Buyers can now filter millions of parts by material, thread size, finish, and brand in real-time, drastically reducing the "time-to-cart."
Hybrid B2B Checkout Workflow
We developed a dual-path conversion strategy. Standard stocking items are available for immediate purchase, while complex orders or distributor partnerships are routed through a streamlined "Request a Quote" interface to capture high-value leads.
Resource-Rich Product Pages (PDPs)
Each product page was transformed into a technical hub. We integrated standardized specification tables and a dedicated "Downloads" block for PDF documentation and CAD drawings, meeting the rigid requirements of industrial procurement.
Website Design & User Experience (UX)
The redesign refocuses the storefront around technical clarity + speed to product:
- Clear, categorized navigation aligned with how buyers shop infrastructure products (server racks, cooling, power, accessories, etc.).
- Improved visual hierarchy: cleaner typography, consistent product presentation, and simplified layouts for faster scanning.
- Stronger conversion pathways: prominent CTAs for Quote Requests, Contact, and key product actions—reflecting the consultative nature of many purchases.
The new site experience prioritizes technical clarity and fast paths to the right product:
- Stronger category and product discovery for racks, cabinets, power, cooling, and accessories.
- Decision-support messaging close to purchase actions (lead time, availability, shipping method).
- Procurement-first layout with standardized specs and built-in downloads to support approvals and implementation.
Main Features
Enterprise Theme + Customizations
The selected theme foundation supports large catalogs and complex navigation patterns—critical for infrastructure ecommerce with many categories and subcategories.
Enterprise Theme + Customizations: Built for speed and massive inventory handling with no external libraries.
Advanced Header & Mega-Menus: Quick-access navigation to major brands like ARaymond/Tinnerman, AVK, and Heyco.
Predictive Search: Optimized for technical SKU strings and part numbers common in the fastener industry.
B2B Logic: Enhanced support for distributor partnership programs and bulk volume inquiries.
Responsive Ecommerce Experience
The new storefront delivers a responsive ecommerce experience with consistent patterns across screen sizes—important for buyers researching specs on mobile, then purchasing or requesting quotes later on desktop.
Conclusion
The digital transformation of Advance Components turned a traditional warehouse operation into a 24/7 sales engine.
- Improved Discoverability: Technical SKUs are now found within seconds via optimized site architecture.
- Increased B2B Lead Gen: The streamlined quote process has reduced friction for large-scale procurement.
- Mobile-First Utility: Field technicians can now identify and order parts directly from job sites via a fully responsive interface.
- Technical Authority: Positioned the site as an industry resource through integrated "FastenerLab" content and documentation.
